Abstract

The aim of current study is to evaluate the effect of Sage (Salvia Mirzayanii) on performance and some immunity parameters of broiler chicks. A total of 200 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned in 5 experimental groups: 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1 percent sage. Each treatment was assigned to four replicates of 10 birds according to a completely randomized design. Body weight gain and feed intake were recorded on weekly basis and reported as time series. On day 42 two bird in each replicate were sacrificed and carcass of them were sectioned and weighed. On d 7, all birds were vaccinated against Newcastle disease vaccine (NDV). On d 25 and 35 sheep red blood cells (SRBC) were injected to three birds in each replicate through wing vein, and one week after injection blood sampling were done. On day 42 two birds in each pen were slaughtered and breast and thigh meat were mixed and homogenized, then MDA of 1 g of it were extracted by TBA method and measured using spectrophotometer method. Data were analyzed using SAS 9.1 software according to Duncan multiple range test. Feed intake from day 1 to 35 was significantly different between experimental groups (P < 0.05). Body weight gain and feed conversion ratio were significantly different from day 1 to 42 (P < 0.05). The 1% level of sage showed the lowest feed intake and body weight gain, as well as the highest feed conversion ratio. Live weight, Relative heart, intestine and breast weights were significantly affected by dietary treatments (P < 0.05). Relative carcass, thigh, liver, proventriculus and gizzard weights did not affected by dietary treatments (P > 0.05) but treatments containing sage had higher values. Results of SRBC1 had not significant differences (P > 0.05) but result of DNCB, SRBC2 and HI showed significant differences between treatments between treatments (P < 0.05). Effect of experimental treatments on MDA was significant (P < 0.05) and using some levels of sage reduced MDA compared to control group. The most E. coli population in Ilium was seen in 0% level (P > 0.05). The most population of Lactic acid was observed in 1% level. The most population of total count bacteria were observed in 0.5% level. The result of current study showed that using optimal levels of sage leaf powder could improve performance of broiler chickens during finisher period, carcass traits, immune response and meat peroxidation.
