Abstract

The natural resources of vast land of Iran are rich but accessing to watery resources affected through climate and topography conditioning each region would be different. The irrigation networks are made to providing maximum productivity of soil and water with structures where technical and economic principles will be followed and hence minimum of losses and maximum of operation will be accompanied. The irrigation flumes as, one of the most important sections of Irrigation and drainage networks have effective role in reducing losses and improving the efficiency of the farm water delivery. Sistan plain is located in the eastern part of Iran’s flat and the north of Sistan-Baluchestan province with hot and dry region. The extent of Sistan plain irrigation and drainage network is about 95000 hectares. The sub-irrigation network was established by half-pipe flumes. The known seasonal wind of Sistan plain is called the 120-day with a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour. One of the main problems of the Sistan flumes is the water overflow caused by the wind. In the context of this study, 5-meter flumes of 1000 type were installed in the research farm of Zabol University and overflow losses of them by wind were examined. In this regard, research variables were dimension less by the π Buckingham method. The research experiments were done by the freeboards of 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20 and 22.5. The results showed that with increasing wind speed, increase wave height and slope of the water surface and then increase the flume overflow losses. The relative water temperature is reduced by increasing wind speed. The effect of wind speed and water temperature on overflow losses reduced by increasing freeboard. The flume overflow losses in the wind speed with a return period of 100 years (173 kilometers per hour) were determined 64.34% for 7.5cm freeboard and 0.72% for 22.5cm freeboard, therefore recommended that the freeboards of the Sisitan irrigation network flumes are considered proportional to the wind speed.
