Abstract

Appropriate information is necessary for management of rangeland vegetation. This information will be provide by measuring vegetation characteristics. Therefore, determining the simple and low cost methods with high accuracy is necessary for measuring vegetation characteristics. Zagros mountainous rangeland is covered with shrub land of Astragacantha; so the purpose of this study was to compare different measuring methods of cover percentage, density and determining the spatial patterns of Astragacantha. To do so, three ecological site of high, moderate and low density of Astragantha were selected in the Lashgardar_Malayer protected area in Hamadan province-Iran. In each site three units of one hectare area were defined. In each unit, based on systematic-random method, we used three transect (50 m) and 54 plots (3 m2). Linear transect was determined as control method for the comparison of measuring methods of Astragacantha cover percentage in units. Other methods with two perpendicular diameters, estimated at 10 × 10 plot, estimate the theoretical in plot and point transect. All of the individuals of Astragacantha in one unit per each site were counted to measure the density of a control group and distance methods of measuring density run at all 9 units of three sites. These methods were compared with each other and with control unit by considering accuracy, precision, and time. We used Johnson & Zimmer, Pillow, Hopkins, T-square, and Hines methods at 9 units for determining the spatial pattern of Astragacantha. The data were summarized and sorted in Excel and statistical analyzes were performed by SPSS 16. One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the different methods' estimation of density and cover, also Duncan test was used to understand which method show significant differences. The methods of measuring density were compared based on three criteria, precision, accuracy and time; bandit was found to be the most efficient one. Results showed that cover percentage of Astragacantha at three sites low, medium and high density were 6.36%, 16.15% and 20.57%, respectively. The results of comparing methods of measuring the cover percent showed that the point transect method was the most efficient one. Actual density of Astragacantha in low, medium and high density sites were 0.51, 1.07 and 2.76 individual per square meter, respectively. The closest individual, second and third closest individual are more reliable methods for measuring density. Taking Hopkins and Pillow indicators of spatial pattern into acount the results showed that spatial pattern at medium and high density sites was random and at low density sit was clumped.
