Abstract

Chemical constituents of the plants especially medicinal ones are highly affected by phenological stage. To achieve the highest quantity of chemical constituents in medicinal plants, variation of plant phenology should be precisely monitored. This study aimed to assess the quantitative and qualitative variations of the active constituents in two range medicinal plant species, Marrubium vulgare and Salvia macrosiphon, across the plants growth period to determine the best harvest time. The study was carried out in Dalphard rangeland, Jiroft, southwestern Iran. Mean annual rainfall and temperature were mm and ◦C, respectively Plant sampling was carried out in three phonological stages including vegetative growth, flowering and seed ripening. The essential oil of samples was extracted by hydro-distillation method using Clevenger. The essential oil composition was identified with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). One way ANOVA was employed to analyze data. Phonological stage had a significant effect on the quantity of essential oil in both M. vulgare and S. macrosiphon (P <0.05 ). The quantity of essential oil was differed amongst phonologic stages (P < 0.05). In both species, the highest and lowest quantities of essential oil were obtained in flowering and seed ripening stages, respectively. Thirty four different volatile components such as γ– Eudesmol (11.93% ), β-Citronellol ( 9.90), Citronelly formate( 9.50), Germacrene- D(9.37 ), Geranyl formate ( 6.25), Geranyl tiglate (5.53 ), Ledene ( 3.35) were identified in essential oil of Marrubium vulgare. Whereas, volatile components were identified in S. macrosiphon. The major volatile components of essential oil in S. macrosiphon were Cyperene (11% ), β–Cubebene (10.6 ), Germacrene-B (7.0 ), β-Selinene ( 6.7), α-Farnesene ( 6.5), Aromandedrene (5.8 ), α-Cadinol (3.6 ). Flowering stage, which occurs in mid April, was determined as the best harvest time to achieve the highest amount of essential oil in M. vulgare and S. macrosiphon in Dalfard rangelands
