Abstract
Gothic literature is one of the literary genres that has found a large audience in the world of novels today and many writers in the Arab world have turned to this type of novel writing. The main feature of this type of novels is fear. The genre was first introduced to the world of literature in 0764 with the novel The Palace of Otranto by Horace Walpole. Characteristic of this type of novels are eerie spaces, scary times, horrible and sometimes supernatural and imaginative events. This type of novel was introduced in Egypt under the leadership of "Ahmad Khalid Tawfiq" and continued with the novels of people like "Hassan Al-Jundi". Al-Jazar is one of Hassan Al-Jundi's most successful and well-known novels. The characters of this novel have the characteristics of hard-hearted, mentally ill and dual with a seductive appearance and a terrible inner self. The events of this novel are full of bloodshed and anxiety. So it's one of the great things to look at in Gothic literature. In this research, an attempt is made to identify the Gothic literature and the characteristics of this type of literature and also to study them in the novel Al-Jazar by Hassan Al-Jundi as one of the horror novels of Egyptian literature. The results of this study show that this novel contains the main features of Gothic literature and in the characterization of the protagonist, Adam Abd al-Rahman, is based on the avenging character of Gothic novels. The author writes the novel based on facts and the real world and avoids the supernatural and unreal events.
