Abstract
Freshwater and soil salinity crises are the most important limiting factors in arid regions. In these conditions, agricultural activity with considering environmental limitation such as medicinal plants production could be as a smart strategy in order to sustain development especially in Sistan region. For this purpose, a field experiment with 16 treatments and 3 replicates was conducted at the Agricultural Research Institute of Zabol University in Chah-Nimeh during 2017 and 2018. A completely randomised split-plot design was used, combining four irrigation treatments (full irrigation with freshwater [FF], Partial Root Zone Drying (PRD) with freshwater [PF], PRD with saline water [PS] and PRD with alternating fresh and saline water [PFS]) with four soil amendment treatments (charcoal nano-biochar [NB], composted cow manure [CM], vermicomposted cow manure [VM] and a control without soil amendments). The lowest and highest values for plant height (41.2-54.8 cm), number of umbel per plant (35.2- 47), number of branches per plant (11.8-15.1) and seed yield (248.8-496.6 Kg ha—1) were observed in FF.VM in the second year and PS.WA in the first year, respectively. In addition, the highest value for the 1000-seed weight (0.73-0.96 gr), Biological yield (768.4-1323.7 Kg ha—1) and Harvest Index (31.8-41.4%) were observed in FF.VM, FF.CM and PFS.CM and the lowest value for them were achieved in PS.WA, PS.WA and FF.WA, respectively. Percent of essential oil varied between 2% (FF.WA) to 3.4% (PS.VM) and the oil yield varied from 6 kg ha—1 (FF.WA) to 14.4 kg ha—1 (PFS.VM). Furthermore, freshwater productivity of oil yield (FWP oil) varied between 0.68 (FF.WA) to 3.84 (PS.VM) gr m—3. The application of NB, VM, and CM lead to 43.9, 90 and 83% increase in FWP oil compared to WA respectively and PF, PS and PFS increased FWP oil 69.2, 163.8 and 123.3% respectively compared to FF. In overall, the combination of PRD and soil amendments could improve the oil yield and enhance saving freshwater in comparison with the usual condition
