Abstract

The improvement of industrialization and urbanization is the main cause of different ecological problems. Thus environmental protection becomes more important. Discgarging wastewater containing heavy metals into surface water make them in appropriate for municipal agricultural purposes. In these study different absorbents such as active Carbone, natural and modified zeolite was used to removal manganese ions from aqueous solutions. Zeolites were extracted from Semnan mines. At first chemical and physical properties of each absorbent were determined by FT-IR spectrum test. Moreover physical and chemical properties of zeolite were determined by XRD and XRF test. Then the pH of various aqueous solutions in the standard laboratory condition was tested with mixing rate of 150 rpm. Concentration of 2 mgl- 1, 6 hour contact time and pH range of 3 to 8. Optimum pH of single and combined element was determined as of 6, 5 and 5 for activated Carbone, natural and modified zeolite respectively. Then uptake kinetics experiments were performed. Results showed that with increasing contact time. The efficiency of absorption of manganese increases and the equilibrium time will remain almost constant. Equilibrium time will remain almost constant. Equilibrium time for each absorbent was determined and the results showed that they are equal for activated carbon and modified zeolite. Maximum absorption of manganese for activated carbon, natural and modified zeolite with concentration of 2 mgl-1 in single element solution were abstained as 1.95, 1.27 and 1.5 and 1.54, 1.33 and 1.52 mgl-1 in combined solution respectively. Kinetics’ models of Ho et al, Lagergern and Avrami were fitted to kinetic data of the all three absorbents and the results showed that the Lagergern and Avrami models are better than the Ho et al model. Absorption isotherm experiments were performed in the laboratory temperature and optimum pH. Test results showed that the Froundlich isotherm model is better than Langmuir model. In this study the effect of iron on the absorption of manganese was studied too. The results showed that only when the concentration of iron was more than manganese, Absorption of manganese was reduced by zeolite. Then analysis of absorption of kineticts of combined solution of iron and manganese with concentration of 2, 5, 8 and 10 mgl-1 it was observed that at the concentration of 10 mgl-1, zeolite absorbs iron (8.08) and manganese (7.928) equally. This proves that each absorbent has a certain capacity which depends on hydration radious of the element. Specific surface of each absorbents were measured by methylene blue method. And it was 12.581 and 13.453 m2g for natural and modified zeolite respectively. Finally the relationship between absorbent's specific surface and their capacity were determined and concluded that there is a significant relationship between them.
