Abstract
Today, the issue of sustainability is the main focus of all development plans and activities including rural development. In this regard, the sustainable livelihood approach is among the most recent approaches in rural development which have attracted a lot of attention for rural development and reducing poverty in rural areas. In fact, sustainable livelihood approach attempts to identify main factors affecting rural livelihood and the relations between these factors. Besides investigating the livelihood level of rural households in Fasa Township, the present research identifies factors affecting handmade carpets development and also obstacles on the way of production of this industry. This descriptive-analytical research studies 30 villages prominent in the production of handmade carpets. A wide range of indicators related to each economic, social and organizational dimension was taken into account and has been studied in two levels: household and village. Mainly local experts, members of Islamic Council of villages, and the village governors took part in filling in the questionnaires. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and statistical, spatial analyzes were used to analyze the data obtained from questionnaires and field observation forms. The results of this research indicated that 69.93 percent of villages under study are weak or medium in terms of livelihood level and 29.97 percent of them were ranked as good or very good in terms of livelihood level. Moreover, based on one-way ANOVA the role of organizational factors is bigger than other factors in developing handmade carpets. Other findings of this research reveal that villages located in the area under study are significantly different from each other in terms of restrictions for production of handmade carpets.
