Abstract
An experiment was conducted to determine the metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein requirements of Japanese quail during the starter period. The chicks were fed standard diet containing 2900 kcal/kg ME and 26% CP from 0 to 7 d of age. At 7 d, 800 quail chick with similar body weight were randomly allotted to 40 floor pens. Nine-central composite design (CCD) diets were formulated to provide 5 levels of dietary ME (2809-3091 kcal/kg) and CP (19-24.8% of diet). The response surface models were fitted on the body weight (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) data. Analysis of variance showed the non-linear trend of CP concentrations for BWG and FCR to dietary treatment, but ME effects were not significant. Canonical Analysis revealed that the stationary points for BWG and FCR were the saddle points and ridge analysis was applied to get the requirement points. The maximum ride for BWG was obtained at 2950 kcal/kg ME and 25% CP. The minimum ridge for FCR was achieved at 2878 kcal/kg ME and 24.4% CP. The result of the present study showed that response surface model is an appropriate tool to determine nutritional requirements of Japanese quail during the starter period.
