Abstract

Occurring of destructive floods in flood plains has been followed by lots of damages, thus predicting of hydraulic behavior of the river has a vital importance for establishing an appropriate improvement in these regions. In the Gholjogh River, Barzou reservoir dam was designed in order to water supply and reduce of flood damages and the Shirvan diversion dam was designed to river water diversion. In this study, the effects of hydraulic structures of Barzou and Shirvan on flood zoning of the Gholjogh river were determined using HEC-RAS software, which has very good ability in simulating the hydraulic behavior of rivers and computation of the water surface profiles. So after preparing of the TIN map, the plan and cross sections of the river in ArcGIS were delineated by using HEC Geo RAS, and then were transferred into the HEC_RAS model. Then geometric data of hydraulic structures of the flow path was added to the model. Gradually varied flow was stimulated by the standard step method in steady condition after calibration stages. Finally, the output data of HEC-RAS model were transformed to ArcGIS in order to calculate the flood zone of the studied region. The results show that the maximum flood rate of Gholjogh River for a 100 year return period is 539.4004 and 275.0736 m3/sec in Korkanlou and Ghordanlou tributaries, respectively. The flood zones were calculated 17.35 and 19.98 Km2 in existence and non-existence of hydraulic structures, respectively. The maximum flood rate with a 50 year return period was calculated 459.0647 and 245.0125 m^2/sec in these tributaries, respectively, which were more than the capacity of this river. In this condition, flood zones were estimated 17.25 and 19.5 Km^2 , in existence and nonexistence of hydraulic structures, respectively. The maximum flood rate in Korkanlou and Ghordanlou tributaries were calculated 352.866 and 205.274 m3/sec, respectively, Which was equivalent to flood with a 50 year return period of River The flood zone in this situation was calculated 18.1 Km2. Based on the results of this research, combination of the mathematic model of HEC_RAS and the geographical information system (GIS) is a useful tool in Flood zoning of the Gholjogh river.
