Abstract

In conditions of limited water resources and the relative abundance of arable land (conditions prevailing in most parts of the country), the main objective should be to increase production per unit of water consumed and the efficient use of these resources. The alternate furrow irrigation on row crops can be considerably saves water. In the present study, different deficit irrigation management scenarios as alternate furrow irrigations considering sensitive growths stages of corn were assessed in terms of their effects on yield and yield components. This research was performed as a randomized full block design with six treatments and three replications. The treatments were full furrow irrigation in whole growing season, alternate furrow irrigation in whole growing season, full irrigation at the establishment stage and alternate irrigation in the other stages, full irrigation at flowering stage and alternate irrigation in the other stages, full irrigation at establishment and flowering stage and alternate irrigation in the other stages, full irrigation at flowering and ripening stages and alternate irrigation in other stages. Time of irrigation was based on 50% of the allowable depletion of soil moisture in control treatment and water volume was based on soil moisture content at field capacity in the depth of the root. At the end of the growing season characteristics such as biological yield, dry matter yield, leaf, stem and ear was measured with a stick. After collection of data by the software SAS (ver.9.1) were analyzed and compared using Duncan's test at a significance level of 5% was used. Overall, the effect of deficit irrigation on yield and yield components was statistically, significant (p<0.01). Most dry biological function of full irrigation throughout the growing was 18,385 kg per hectare. And the lowest dried biological yield with 13100 kg/ ha was belong alternate irrigation in all growth stages. Full irrigation in the whole growing season had the highest wet forage yield (67022 kg/ha) and alternate furrow irrigation in the whole growing season, had the lowest wet forage yield (50064 kg/ha). The best treatment was the full irrigation at the flowering stage and alternate irrigation in the other stages. With this treatment, the reduction in wet and dry forage yields, leaves wet and dry weights and stem wet and dry weights in comparison with control was about 8 to 14 %. This is quiet acceptable as it saves 39% irrigation water. The highest irrigation water use efficiency (1.88 kg/m3) was achieved by full irrigation at flowering stage and alternate irrigation in the other stages.
