Abstract

One of the gaps in the land use classifications in the land use planning schemes is the ‎restoration use. This issue is more obvious in areas like Sistan, which urgently needs restoration ‎to control dust storms and stabilize quicksand. In the present study, the areas with priority for ‎restoration use in order to protect the soil through physical and biological methods were ‎identified and suitable plant functional types for biological stabilization were introduced. The ‎intended scenarios were based on the conditions of dewatering Hamoon wetland, complete ‎dewatering and current conditions. The site selection criteria were determined and mapped, and ‎after weighting and combining the criteria with multi-criteria decision-making methods, the ‎priority areas for soil stabilization and quicksand were identified. For the zoning of wind ‎erosion susceptibility in the study area, the multi-criteria evaluation method (MCE) is used ‎using nine factor criteria including vegetation cover, average wind speed, soil density, sand, ‎clay, coarse soil particles, slope percentage, geology and aspect (wind-rose) and land use (wind ‎deposits) was used as constraint. Factors were standardized using the linear fuzzy method and ‎weighted linear combination (WLC) was used to combine factors, constraints and weights, and ‎the resulting map was reclassified into five classes of erodibility based on the natural ‎breakpoints method. One of the best ways to restore desert areas is biological restoration ‎through the establishment of plant functional types (PFTs) instead of individual species. In the ‎present study, four plant functional types, including Hydrophytes-Halophytes, ‎Xerophytes-‎Psammophytes, Xerophytes-Alkalophytes and Xerophyte-Halophytes, were ‎identified in the ‎study area, and according to the ecological needs of each type Suitable ‎areas for cultivation of ‎each type were determined by multi-criteria decision making ‎‎(MCDM). ‎This step was repeated ‎for each scenario separately. At the end, the areas that were identified in the priority of soil ‎protection operations in the first stage and were not recognized as suitable for the cultivation of ‎any plant functional type, were proposed for physical protection.‎ The results showed that the area of the areas requiring physical stabilization in the scenarios ‎of current conditions and waterlogged conditions are 139,994 hectares and 67,356 hectares, ‎respectively, and in terms of percentage, they are 5.01 and 2.41 percent of the entire region, ‎respectively. The area of areas prone to biological stabilization is 99131 hectares and 24412 ‎hectares in the scenarios of current conditions and waterlogged conditions, respectively, and in ‎terms of percentage, it is 3.55% and 0.87% of the whole area, respectively. In other words, the ‎area of areas requiring physical stabilization and the area of areas prone to biological ‎stabilization in the scenario of the current conditions are about 2 and 4 times of the waterlogged ‎conditions, respectively, which shows that in the scenario of the current conditions, the area of ‎the areas requiring physical stabilization and the area of the areas prone to biological ‎stabilization is more than the waterlogged conditions. According to the scale of the present ‎study, the results of this research can answer the management needs of the organizations ‎involved in the field of spatial prioritization and the method of stabilization of quicksand and ‎soil protection in Sistan on a regional scale.‎
