Abstract

Soil moisture characteristic curve (SMCC) is one of the most important entry for water movements, mineral and pollution transport in soil. Therefore, understanding the spatial variability of soil moisture curve is very important. In this study, two different methods were compared to estimate the spatial distribution of soil moisture curves. For this purpose, soil moisture content of 113 soil samples of Sistan dam (0-15 cm depth) were measured in different matric potential (10-, 33-, 100-, 300- 1500- kPa) using pressure plates in two repetitions. In the first method, the parameters of water retention curve (WRC) model obtained in the sampling points and then these parameters were interpolated in undetermined points. WRC models used in this study are Van Genuchten, Brooks and Corey and Kozugi (log-normal). In the second method, the amounts of soil moisture were estimated in considered potential (in areas where no data were estimated) using interpolation methods, then the parameters of WRC models will be achieved by fitting curve to potential points. Comparing and evaluating the results in done using one third of measured matric potential, which are omitting before using interpolation methods. The results show that the second method act better than the first method, except for Van Genuchten Model. By increasing the matric potential, the accuracy of the calculations will reduce. Kozugi and Brooks and Corey models are more accurate. Brooks and Corey model has easier mathematical calculations. The results showed that the amount of soil moisture and parameters of model has good spatial correlation.
