Abstract

Chronic Hyperlipidemia is accompanied with enhanced oxidative stress and reduce the activity of antioxidant defense system. The first step for balancing of blood fats is using treatment diets containing effective compounds in decreasing blood fats. Carambola plant is a source of phenolic compounds that have physiological properties including antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, antithrombotic, and have cardioprotective effects. Pharmacological studies have shown that different species of cactus sex effects such as lowering blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides, an antiplatelet effect, and have an antioxidant effect. This study aimed to investigate the effect of alcoholic extract of cactus and star fruit on blood lipid levels, histopathological lesions of the liver, liver enzymes and levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum as an indicator of lipid peroxidation (by TBARS) in adult male rats is hyperlipidmic. In this experiment, 40 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups of 10 rats including: (1) control, (2) fed with hyperlipidmic diet, (3) fed with hyperlipidmic diet and treated with cactus fruit extract, (4) Nutrition star fruit extract treated with hyperlipidmic diet were divided. The mice were fed a hyperlipidmic diet for one month. Fruit Juices for 21 days after the end of the experiment the rats were orally treated, the rats were etherized and blood sampling from their hearts was performed. Samples from livers were collected and tissue sections were provided. Finally, alterations of serum fats between groups were compared by using one-way ANOVA test and Tukey post hoc test. The results showed that the levels of cholesterol and triglyceride and LDL in groups 3and 4 were significantly controlled comparing with hyperlipidemia group and this decreasing was higher in group 4. In case of HDL, both plants were able to effect in elevation of HDL levels, but this elevation was only significant in group 4 comparing with hyperlipidemia group. Both extracts were able to decrease serum level of AST and ALT, significantly comparing with hyperlipidemia group. Despite rather higher effect of group 4, the difference of the two extracts effect was not significant comparing to each other. after confirmation of tissue disruption and denaturation in hyperlipidemia group comparing with the control group, it was observed that group 4 had a better status and the sample was intact in central regions and vacuolization and granulation was more lesser comparing with hyperlipidemia group. The results also showed that consumption of cactus and star fruit extract can improve lipid profiles and decreased serum levels of MDA as a marker of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant boost performance.
