Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of feeding hemp seed (HS) in diets with low levels of crude protein (CP) on performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality, fatty acid composition of meat, Ruminal metabolites and blood parameters on Baluchi fattening lambs and the possibility of CP reduction in the diets due toadverse effects of unsaturated fatty acids presence in HS on protozoal population and nitrogen recyclingin the rumen. Twenty-four Baluchi male lambs, with 25±1 kg body weight (BW) and 4–5 months of age, were used in a completely randomized design experiment. Experimental diets included: 1) control diet with 14% crude protein; 2) diet with 14% crude protein, containing 10% of HS and 3) diet with 12% crude protein containing 10% HS. Diets were fed ad libitum for 84 days, after 14 days of adaptation. At the end of the experiment, the lambs were transferred to the slaughterhouse at one time after the final weighting, where slaughter and carcass parameters were examined. Urine spot sampling was used to determine the purine derivatives. Rumen fluid samples were taken through esophagus-tube connected to vacuum pump before and three hours after morning feeding on the last day of experiment and then pH and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) were determined. At the end of the fattening period, fattening parameters were measured and blood samples were taken. The results indicated that diets containing HS had significant effect on dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG) and final weight of the lambs (P < 0.05). The highest DMI and ADG were observed for lambs fed with 14% crude protein. The final weight in lambs fed with HS with 14 and 12% crude protein diet were 46.11 and 43.03 kg, respectively which was higher than control group with final weight 42 kg )P > 0.05(. lean meat weight, the weight of shoulder, brisket and leg parts were higher in lambs fed with 10% hemp seed than control lambs (P < 0.05). The highest amounts of linoleic acid (C18:2) and linolenic acid (C18:3) were in the longissimus lumborum (LL) and the subcutaneous (SC) fat of lambs fed with hemp seed (P < 0.05). Supplementation of Hemp seed increased the Oleic acid )C18:1( and PUFA contents in LL (P < 0.01). Feeding HS increased (P < 0.001) proportions of Lauric acid (C 12: 0) and palmitoleic acid C16:1 in SC. The lowest number of ciliate protozoa and the lowest ruminal NH3-N concentration were observed in lambs fed with HS. Microbial protein synthess in lambs fed with HS was higher than control group. According to the results, improvement of performance and fatty acid profile of subcutaneous and LL lambs fed with hemp seed can be used in ruminant feeding and reducing 2% of CP diet did not have any negative effect on growth performance than control group. Diets containing hemp seed and different levels of crude protein can be used in the diet of fattening lambs.
