Abstract

Growth traits considered as the most important traits recorded in farm animals. Improving the growth performance may have a negative impact on the immune system performance. The immune system is a mechanism that protects the body against pathogens. As the weakening of the immune system, mortality and damage of the birds’ increases. Conversely, its improvement may also negatively affect the growth performance. Therefore, there is a need for sufficient information about genetic parameters such as heritability and genetic correlations of immune and growth traits in Japanese quail to provide a successful breeding program to improve the health and quality of eggs and meat quail. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of maternal genetic classification of early growth performance of wild strain of Japanese quail on humoral immune responses. The breeding and recording of the birds used in this study was carried out at the research farm of the Special Livestock Research Center of University of Zabol. For this purpose, data were used of growth and immunity traits. To record the pedigree of the chicks, the identity of the birds was recognized by the birds’ wing tag immediately after hatch. In order to record the growth characteristics of the chicks, the weighing of birds was carried out 5 days after leaving the egg (weights of days 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 days). For measurement of humoral immunity at 31 and 38 days, in order of injection SRBC and measured in age of 45 days, blood samples were collected from quails for determination of antibody titters produced against SRBC by hemagglutination micro titer methodology. Using the data collected from the growth of birds over several generations, the maternal breeding value of animals was determined and grouped by birds based on the breeding and phenotypic value of growth traits. After grouping the birds, the humoral immune system function of the birds was analyzed in different groups. ASReml and R software were used to estimate breeding values and comparison of the groups. In general, the results of this study indicated that the selection of birds based on their maternal breeding values of the early growth traits leads to improvement of the function of the humoral immune system, especially immune responses against NDV. In view of the proper breeding value of maternal breeding values (BVm) of early growth traits, in addition to direct inheritance, it is suggested that maternal additive genetic effects also would be used to evaluate early growth traits.
