Abstract

Today, due to excessive use of groundwater resources, groundwater levels have dropped dramatically in the country, and in some cases with improper management, the quality of these resources has also been affected. For example, by constructing the Gotvand-olya Reservoir dam in the salinity and gypsum areas around Karun River water quality has been decreased. Considering the use of this river's water as drinking purposes for downstream cities, villages and olso agricular uses, this quantitative and qualitative changes can cause problems in the downstream areas. On the other hand, due to the poor quality of Karun river water in the downstream, lower quality of the current situation can lead to numerous problems in the downstream areas for both drinking and agriculture purposes. One of the purposes of this study is to investigate the effect of salinity of the Gotvandolya Dam reservoir on groundwater in the Aghili plain located at the nearest plain to the dam, and finally, quantitative and qualitative changes (including main cations and anions) of groundwater of this plain, before and after The impounding of the dam have been investigated. Aghili plain is located at 25 km from Shooshtar city in Khuzestan province. In this research, by collecting water level data and groundwater quality parameters in the 12- year period from water year 2005-2006 to 2016-2017 quantitative and qualitative zoning was performed using ArcGIS software and time and spatial variation are investigated. Also, for detailed examination, hydrographs of observation wells and quality monitoring wells are also plotted. To investigate the quantitative and qualitative trend of the changing, for this purpose non-parametric Mann-Kendall test with complete elimination of MK3 and age slope estimator is used. The results of this study showed that the Gotvand-olya dam caused an increase in groundwater level of 1.30 m, which is due to the indirect effect of the dam through irrigation network on the Aghili plain aquifer. Also, immediately after the impounding of the dam in August 2011, the concentration of all elements was increased and then water quality was controlled by reservoir management and water release from the reservoir of the dam to the irrigation network, Since 2014, the rate of increasing of its elements concentration has been decreased. this is why the results of the Man- Kendall test indicate a decreasing in the rate of the concentration of the quality elements trend after the impounding of the dam.
