Abstract

The issue of urban space is among the most important topics that has concerned a large number of urban planners. However, knowledge of analysis and production of such urban spaces are mostly affected by the aesthetic aspects which rely on the spatial form and pay less attention to the content of its geographic space. Therefore, in the present study, it is attempted to regard the form along with a focus on the content of the geographic space of the city using the approach of sustainable tourism development, especially in desert cities. The city of Sirjan was chosen as the study area, mainly due to its historical background. Besides, the city not only establishes a link between the tourist provinces, but it also owns the potential to attract many motorist tourists as motorists. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the role of urban form and space in attracting tourists to sustainable development in Sirjan via using descriptive-analytic research methodology which is based on library studies and questionnaires and field surveys done in the city. Data were analyzed using inferential statistical tests in SPSS software, and analysis of the urban form and space were conducted space syntax in ArcGIS environment. The results of the analyzing and testing of the research hypotheses revealed that urban form and space play a vital role in attracting tourists in Sirjan. Moreover, among the studied indicators, the most important priorities of the urban form and space based on the sustainable development approach are the indicators of facilities and infrastructure services. In addition, according to the model of space syntax and in terms of urban form and space and based on the four parameters of mean depth, connectivity, interconnection and control of the eastern parts, and somewhat of the outskirts of the city, accessibility is far better access for tourists than other areas.
