Abstract

The present study investigates different kinds of deviation in poems of two Afghan poets, i.e. Khalilullah Khalili and Mohammad Kazem Kazemi. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Leech’s recommended model and its descriptions and margins in Kourosh Safavi’s book, ‘From Linguistics to Literature’. With a formalistic approach to the study of literature, and especially poetry, one of the requirements of making a literary text is a technique called foregrounding by Shklovsky. By relying on this view and with a descriptive analysis method, this study investigates its data. After collecting data, the eight types of linguistic deviations (phonological, graphological, lexical, semantic, dielectal, grammatical, deviation of historical period and deviation of register) were statistically analysed. The frequency of deviations is illustrated on diagrams. The findings indicate that there are different kinds of deviations in Khalilullah Khalili and Mohammad Kazem Kazemi’s poems. The highest frequency was in deviation of historical period, grammatical and semantic deviations and the lowest frequency was in graphological and dialectal deviations. The results of this study can be used as a major basis for aestethetic research on the works of these two poets.
