Abstract

Prevention, control or elimination of brucellosis require accurate epidemiological data and information. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the epidemiology of brucellosis and its related factors in South Khorasan province during 2011-2017. In this survey, All recorded data of patients with brucellosis in South Khorasan during the 2011-2017 were investigated. Patient information was collected through Birjand University of Medical Sciences and hospitals and health centers in South Khorasan Province. Collected data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics methods such as Chi-square test and regression analysis During this six years, 1489 people were infected with brucellosis in this province. The incidence of brucellosis was 2 people per 1000 in these six years. Incidence of brucellosis in people over 46 years of age (2.7 per thousand) was more than other age groups. The incidence of brucellosis in men (2.6 in 1,000) was higher than in women (1.4 per 1,000). The occurrence of brucellosis among farmers (2.7 per thousand) was significantly higher than other occupational groups. The occurrence of brucellosis in rural areas (2.3 per thousand) was significantly more than urban areas (1.2 per 1,000 people). The highest incidence of brucellosis was observed in the Zirkouh city (15.9 per thousand) and the lowest incidence of brucellosis was observed in the Birjand city (0.3 per thousand), and this difference was statisticallysignificant(P=0.004). Considering the higher incidence of brucellosis among men, middle-aged and old people, rural residents, livestock farmers and farmers, and new counties (with more rural tissue), it is necessary to pay special attention to these groups. The results showed that agriculture and housing in rural areas are two risk factors for brucellosis in southern Khorasan province.
